JEFFERSON WINTER SHELTER (Homeless Shelter)
Jefferson County Emergency Winter Shelter is the official name for the homeless shelter. This is a temporary emergency shelter for single adults in Port Townsend made possible through a partnership between COAST (Community Outreach Association Shelter Team), several local churches (including St Paul's!), other community partners, and OlyCap.
It is located in the basement of the American Le gion at 209 Monroe street and is open every day, 4 pm to 8 am beginning the Sunday after Thanksgiving until the first week of March. This is the 5th year the shelter will be open, and this year the time has been extended until March 18th - 2 EXTRA WEEKS!
The shelter has approximately 18 beds available each night but can take up to 22 people in an emergency. The average nightly census is around 12 -16, mainly men but 2 - 3 women will be accepted nightly for short term lodging. Last year St Paul's provided volunteers for one 24hour period during Christmas week and 1 week in February. We provided over 290 volunteer hours, including food preparation and serving, transportation of food, and night monitors.
This year St Paul's will be covering December 22nd, December 31st, and the week of January 17th. Watch for an information table and sign-up sheets in the parish hall beginning in November. There are so many ways to help!! THANK YOU!
